Crater Lake and Central Oregon
Few places on Earth command overwhelming awe from observers, but Crater Lake, in south central Oregon, certainly does. Even in a region of volcanic wonders, Crater Lake can only be described in superlatives. Stories of the deep blue lake can never prepare visitors for their first breathtaking look from the brink of this 6-mile wide caldera, which was created by the eruption and collapse of Mt. Mazama almost 7,000 years ago. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in North America, and the four and a half hour drive from Portland, Oregon is well worth the journey. Begin by lodging in either the historic Crater Lake Lodge or in one of the peaceful cabins or campgrounds at Mazama Village. Spend your days gazing at the lake from more than 20 scenic overlooks during a breathtaking trip, by car or bicycle, around Crater Lake on Rim Drive. You can also explore the park by hiking up mountain peaks, cruising through the volcano area on daily boat tours, or learn more about the area’s natural and cultural history on a guided walk. For a nice scenic loop, and to explore more of Eastern Oregon, you can head north on Highway 97 towards Bend. Just south of Bend lies Sunriver Resort, a favorite vacation destination for many Portlanders. The resort has tremendous offerings for families of all ages – from hotel rooms to vacation home rentals, a luxurious spa and restaurant, rafting trips, fly fishing, golf courses, miles of bicycle paths, swimming pools and nighttime stargazing. Just a rock’s throw from there is the High Desert Museum, which is a fun stop for nature lovers. Live animal exhibits (baby porcupines!), interactive displays and some fun facts about the history of “The Old West” make it a must on the activity list. Continuing north on Highway 97 you will enter the heart of Eastern Oregon – Bend. Dubbed the "outdoor playground of the West" for a thousand good reasons, Bend is world famous for both its outdoor pursuits and pristine beauty. You can catch an art exhibit downtown, dine at an award-winning restaurant, spoil yourself at one of the many spas, or summit South Sister, the state's third highest peak. It is a laid-back, friendly mountain town that welcomes visitors wholeheartedly. I’ve traveled several times to Crater Lake and each time is as special as the first. It is that beautiful! If you like the winter and outdoors, there are guided snow mobile trips available that take you to Crater Lake on a 5 hour or so excursion. This is a special way and time of year to view the lake. This adventure is not that much effort or cost for such a unique and safe family experience. I highly recommend it. No matter what time of year you go, this is one of Oregon’s top attractions. http://www.craterlakelodges.com |
