Hood River

Hood River, just 60 miles east of Portland on Interstate Highway 84, is long renowned for its magnificent setting in the Columbia River Gorge, and its scenic drives through the picturesque fruit orchards of the Hood River Valley.

The quaint town of 4,500 has recently become the “Wind surfing capital of the world”. Previously known for growing luscious apples, pears, cherries, peaches and other fruits, and for the view of the majestic snowcapped peak of Mount Hood, Hood River has become the destination of choice for wind surfers from around the world. The winds from the Columbia River Gorge, because of its “funneling” effect, create ideal conditions for riding the waves. The latest addition to the river has been the surging popularity of kite boarding. On an average breezy day, it's typical to see dozens of colorful sails dance across the wide river, all searching for the “epic ride”. To enjoy the view of "board heads" at play, grab a picnic lunch and drive to the Columbia Gorge SailPark or follow Second Street to the waterfront. This is a great place to watch and you are at water’s edge, so bring your swimsuit to cool off. It’s a challenge to watch the water sports without taking a dip yourself. Remember, it’s not unusual for summer temperatures to be in the 90’s day after day in Hood River. Bring your sunscreen.

Both windsurfing and kite boarding lessons and equipment are available in and around Hood River.
